Topic: Your Guide to ThrowWeapon
Posted: 2007/11/14 01:14

Hi all, I know that the TDM guys out there are already wondering how there should be TDM without WeaponThrowing. Well, Weaponthrowing is available through ini-editing IF the mutator Weapon-Respawn is loaded. All you have to do, is modify the [Engine.PlayerInput] section of the UTInput.ini by adding a last line with your binding:

Bindings=(Name="Name of the Key, e.g. Spacebar", Command="ThrowWeapon")

for example to bind the function to SpaceBar:

Bindings=(Name="SpaceBar", Command="ThrowWeapon")

------------

The Weaponswitches are bound by aliases, e.g. GBA_Switchweapon6, so if you want to modify to multi-weapon-selection, you'd better edit the GBA_Alias instead of the binding of the key, for example

Bindings=(Name="GBA_Switchweapon6", Command="Switchweapon 5 | Switchweapon 6")

to select either Linkgun or Minigun. Please note: the last mentioned weapon that is available is taken, so if the line reads "Switchweapon 1 | Switchweapon 2 | Switchweapon 3 | Switchweapon 4 | Switchweapon 5" and you have all weapons, then you'll end up with linkgun after pressing the key.

Thanks!

This puts many minds at ease, and makes the creation of a competitive mod one element less complicated. :D

Does the modified ini last? I hear it gets overwritten (by the gamespy one from the net) every time UT starts.

Weapon respawn? Did they turn on WS for TDM too?!

Weapon Respawn is a WS=OFF Mutator. It seems to be on from the scratch.

No, the Ini does not get overwritten, tried like 20 times now and it stays. Rondrian discovered that ThrowWeapon in console with WS=OFF (or WR=ON if we want to see it this way now) and I spent some minutes to get the idea of the new ini-syntax.

So WS is on by default - still *sigh*

Still, why didnt they do it as a server option and NOT a mutator - Epic dev's must've been high because they've probably listened to Mark Rein :\

Okay, as there seem to pop up questions with everything that you can tell about the game, I'll try to give a personal overview and share my experience. Please keep in mind that I didn't find the time to try everything and this is just what I was able to discover or take as granted so far:

"Weapon Respawn" is a WeaponStay=OFF Mutator. WS normal state seems to be on, but I don't think it reallly matters if you change WS-state via checking a checkbox or adding a mutator so that's quite ok as long as WS-state is off afterwards.

The modified UTInput.ini doesn't get overwritten as far as I can tell. I tried like ~20 times yesterday online and offline and the setting seems to stay in.

Throwweapon only works though while the Weapon-Respawn mutator is running and I think we'll be speaking of WR=ON instead of WS=OFF soon in order to open new players the world of true TDM.

The "FriendlyFire" is neither fish nor meat as it is fixed to 50% and not configurable. Again, it doesn't matter that you have to load it as a mutator but it really unnerving that it has a fixed ratio. Hopefully they'll adjust this.

Even more incomprehensible is the NoSuperPickups mutator: you can either remove ALL superpickups or NO superpickups, meaning that if you don't want Redeemer inside the game, shield, amp, invis, berzerk, keg and everything that is SuperPickup for Epic will be out, too. That's really, really uncomfortable and I see a lot of rules stating "using redeemer isn't allowed" coming up.

The options in the menu are still rather limited so that you'll want to go the inis a lot. Weaponbob and LandingViewShake for example can only be removed by ini-tweaking which is, afaik, at least for WeaponBOB a negative premiere in UT. Bob was always among the options that you could easily get rid off. The first competitive Mutator will probably not be about brightskins or hitsounds as the feedback on hits is pretty good and the skins are well visible in the red-and-blue-modes, but about add the options the game lacks with graphical menus.

Worst of all: Lodbias still seems to work and there isn't any visible hint of an anti-cheat running. Maybe all the fuzz about "we don't speak of anticheat" was an attempt to say "the world is a disc and there were no, are no and never will be any cheaters in UT" - rather unsatisfying for me regarding the adminwork...

The Demo-Watching pretty much suxx balls at it is only 3rd person. You can still use "behindview 0" but the effect is pretty weird: if you're looking in one direction, e.g. "north" then your view is fixed to that direction regardless of the movementdirection of the character (feels like steering a tank in battlefield, the direction of the cannon does not change with the direction of the chassis) and if the movement direction matches the direction of your view, you have a weapon in sight that hovers in midair as no arms are shown. Pretty weird and I don't get why they screwed THIS up.

Deck feels a little small and I've already lost my first 1on1 against Rondrian like 29:1 but some of the other maps seem to be exactly what they should be like (but I don't know the names by heart yet so don't ask ;P)

Well, what more can I say, the German synchro sucks, which isn't a surprise, I've switched to English but not restarted the campaign yet (as it suxx imo and is rather boring) - maybe it gets better.

The Serverbrowser seems improved and sorting numerical instead of alphabetical now, but I didn't find the time to confirm this 100%, the character-design-thing is a nice eye-candy idea but the default-model is the one you know from the demo anyway so who cares, the weaponbalance seems unchanged as it was already pretty good in the demo - only the firerate of the sniper appeared to increased, but that's unconfirmed.

After all, the game has still a lot of flaws and it seems like the publisher was telling the developers that he would cancel payments if they don't release soon so that UT3 was here a little faster than epic planned to, but they were always saying "when it's fun" and fun it is.

Adjustable "NoSuperPickups"-Mutator that allows to select which SPs to disable, adjustable "FriendlyFire"-Mutator that allows to select the damage-percentage of FF, fixed demo-viewing in first person, more options of the inis in the menus and a working anticheat-system even if it's punkbuster and the game would be a lot closer to being market-ready.

But be honest... the amount of things mentioned seem rather small compared to the flaws that other games had at release time and Epic can fix THESE within the first service pack - how hard can it be?

wow, god work gam. Thank god all you germans got the game first is all I can say now so you can do all the testing for the rest of us and we can just download your ini's and jump straight in :)

The only things I don't agree on are lodbias and the need for brightskins.

I don't see the harm in using lodbias, I use it cos I hate the look of the textures in the game. Its just a personal preference. If you try it out, the character team skins are actually darker using lodbias so they are harder to see so I would hardly call it an advantage. I don't see why people would want lodbias removed apart from the paranoia that it gives someone an advantage over you when it doesn't.

That being said, I don't think the team skins are nearly visible enough. There is a bad need for brigktskins imo.

Well, I'm personally a fan of ootb, that's because with every mutator, it gets harder for new players to get into their first game which is not really a good thing.

The skins are visible enough so I don't see a need for a brightskins-mutator as epic already said they're counting on communityworks if this is really needed. Lodbias should be either removed or an option in the menus, the current state is undesireable - my preferences go to "the game as it is" instead of no-textures lodbias, but you're right, that's personal (until I decide to forbid lodbias in the ESL ;P)

I made up a post on utforums.epicgames.com where I stated that:

1. "FriendlyFire"-Mutator should be configurable to a rate of damage done to your teammates
2. "NoSuperPickups" should be configurable to edit which pickups to remove - or write "NoSuperWeapons"
3. Make "ThrowWeapon", "LandingViewshake" and "WeaponBOB" options in the menus
4. Lodbias should be removed or an option in the menus as well
5. the Demoplay-Function should be fixed to make 1st person view possible.

Maybe you want to go there and second this post if you agree with me, you can find the post here

I don't get you. If you admit lodbias is a preference why would you ban it in esl. On top of that, you say its either the game as it is, or not. All the tweaks you refer to above in your first posts are not 'the game as it is'. If you allow them, lodbias is no different.

[om`gam]

Posted: 2007/11/14 10:23

You're right, you don't get me.

"OOTB" was meant on the points of brightskins and hitsounds and adding too many community mutators (>=1), having lodbias removed is just a personal preference and only refers to "the game as it is" as it changes the looks of the game massively - which the other mentioned things don't.

Seen from an easier point of view:
"Bring back the options to the menus that were in the prequels of the game (this includes noSuperweapons, throwweapon, FriendlyFire, weaponbob and landingshake) and remove the options that were blocked by AntiTCC in the past (lodbias) and fix the thing that doesn't work (demo from 1st person)"

How am I supposed to kill my mates with pathetic 50% damage? :p

Btw. the console isn't gone, it's on F10 from the start now, all you have to do is change "ConsoleKey" from F10 to "TILDE" to get it back to Ö on German keyboard, it's TILDE anyway on international keyboards I think...

Epic must realise that working 1st person view in demos is obviously needed for various reasons and so i think it will be in the first patch. If not it sounds fixable from a modders point of view. But i dont have my copy of UT3 yet so i cant be sure.

Nice job [om`gam]!

Does command setbind "button x" throwweapon work if the server is running with the "weaponrespawn"-mutator?

And command throwweapon also works in these "weaponrespawn"-mutator servers?

it's a pity they changed from having superb menu's (little bit ut1, but mostly ut2k3/4) too having the shitest menu's ever (no overview what so ever) with no options at all and gay slider bars. Hopefully you have some influence on them since you admin the ESL?

aah well, it will take some time again to get everything right.

ye gom, lodbias does change how it looks. But that imo is much less than changing how it plays which the other tweaks you talk of will affect. No landing shake, no weapon shake etc. Changing how the game plays is a much bigger tweak (advantage) than simply changing how it looks.

dardoz

Posted: 2007/11/14 11:16

Put it this way. Brightskins are just a matter of time, they will be made by someone in the community. Its just a matter of time. So when brightskins are available think of the lodbias question and how it benefits the experienced players who know how to edit their inis and compare it with the other tweaks that only experienced playes will be able to do through their inis.

Brightskins will make players impossible not to see whether they are in front of a load of horrible textures, or in front of a plain grey wall. So lodbias will give no advantage at all to the ini tweakers using it.

On the other hand, if weapon shake + nolanding shake and only editable through inis, these WILL give an advantage to the players who know how to tweak their inis over those who don't.

I don't hear any good reason why lodbias should be outlawed, it will no competitive advantage yet the other tweaks will and I don't hear anyone saying no weapon shake shouldnt be allowed.
